The Springwatch festival at Potteric Carr

Wow! What a day yesterday was!
Potteric Carr, a MASSIVE nature reserve run by Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, had a day dedicated to BBC Springwatch.

There was so much to do!
Our day started very early at 7.30am with a small mammal trapping session.

My favourite small mammal was a very feisty shrew!
It was barely the morning and we had already found this amazing little Rhinoceros beetle.

Throughout the rest of the morning and the afternoon, were sessions, hands on activities and a bbq to enjoy.
So I sewed some wildflower seeds in a biodegradable pot using peat-free compost and learnt about invasive plants around Yorkshire.

After a while, we became hungry by which point, the bbq had finished for the afternoon. So into the Kingfisher cafe we went to buy a very large plate of food and a well earned cup of tea!

After lunch, we went for a walk and found some very pretty blue flowers.

Paths lead off paths and soon we had no idea where we were!

Along our travels round the reserve, we found a boardwalk which stretched out into the small lake of water, cutting through all the reeds. It was incredibly peaceful.

Eventually, we came across a hide and did a spot of bird watching.

Moving on from that hide and onto a different path on the reserve altogether, we rediscovered the woodland walk path we were on that morning looking for the small mammal traps left out the night before.

There were some fantastic wood carvings along that winding path.

Reaching the Huxterwell marsh, we stopped off at each hide along that path looking for the Bitterns. We saw the Bitterns 4 times that day which was incredibly fortunate for us!

Before our last activity later that evening, we refuelled with cake, biscuits and a much needed cup of tea!

Fuelled up, we were ready to see what wildlife was active around the reserve on a night.

I will ever forget such a day like I had at Potteric Carr.
I learnt so much and saw even more. It was a heart ache to leave at the end of the day.
But until the next time, I have all my fantastic memories!
